One hundred and fifty-one years ago, on November 24, 1859, copies of Darwin's published book entitled, "Origin of the Species", sold out in one day.
The following Information about Darwin, is courtesy of a site I used often when my children were little, Enchanted Learning.
Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist who revolutionized scientific thought with his theory of evolution and natural selection.
After studying at Cambridge University, Darwin served as naturalist on the ship HMS Beagle (captained by Robert Fitzroy) during its five-year voyage around the world traveling west ( December 27, 1831-October 2, 1836). On this trip, Darwin studied a tremendous variety of plant and animal life. Darwin's book called "Origin of the Species", published on November 24, 1859, was a world-shaking book outlined the gradual change in a species from generation to generation through natural selection.
In 1871, Darwin published "The Descent of Man," which focused on the origins of people. Many debates between people continue today about the origin of Man, since Darwin presented his theory of evolution.
While most scientists accept evolution and natural selection, as the method of species formation and the foundation of biology, most people with religious faith, have doubts.
In line with the anniversary of Darwin's book, November 24th, according to South Salem online, is also What Do You Love About America Day.
I love many things about this great country I am proud to live in, and one of those things is the freedom to believe in the theory of evolution, and the freedom to believe that God created life on earth.
The "Man of Science, Man of Faith" was beautifully portrayed in the ABC series, LOST.
In an article I wrote regarding Science vs. Faith, I wrote how the creators of Lost cleverly found a way to incorporate this controversial subject into one powerhouse drama.
Butler University Associate Professor of Religion James McGrath discussed the religious undertones of LOST by saying that religion was always present on LOST. He points out these examples:
John Locke explains to Walt that backgammon is a game older than Jesus Christ is and has two sides playing each other – one light and one dark. (God and the Devil)
The Dharma Initiative - dharma is the Indian religious term meaning “one's righteous duty”. There are hieroglyphics on the temple and Egyptian religious symbols on the statue.
Two lead characters, Dr. Jack Shepard and John Locke represent a man of science, and a man of faith. The Man in Black and Jacob represent the battle between God and the devil.
The most fascinating aspect of these ideas on LOST, is that viewers are left wondering each week, which side is 'dark' and which is 'light'. This is all part of the mysteries surrounding LOST and part of what keeps fans coming back for more.
Now that the series ended, I believe they gave us the answers to the mysteries of LOST by saying that everything that happened to the survivors of the plane crash, were rooted in science and faith.
Therefore, to all, Happy What I Love About America Day, and Happy Origin of Species Day!
